One of the joys of fishing comes when you can do it with your kids or grand kids. Kids have shorter attention spans than adults which can make it difficult to determine when they are old enough to start fishing. Kids tend to get poked and scratched so you need to be prepared for that. Your kids tackle box should be small and lightweight so they can easily handle it. Teaching your kids how to fish is a lot of fun.
Innovation, variety and nostalgia make this hobby rewarding. Although the old lures may be dusty, even a little rusted; they are artifacts of a simpler time in America. Most lures were regional contraptions, made in some hardy soul’s garage or basement. They were designed to be cast with the crude level-wind reels and stiff rods of the time, and were generally heavy, and ran in shallow water, or were fished top water.
There are literally thousands and thousands of choices when it comes to bait for largemouth bass, and many times the sheer number of choices available makes you want to give up on fishing forever. Remember, fish are cold blooded and are heavily impacted by fly fishing reel temperature changes in their surroundings. Fifty to sixty five degrees is considered optimal for many fish species. The action that the buck tail provides underwater is unmatched by any synthetic material. Working one of these jigs through heavy cover is an extremely effective way to fool bass. These baits are fished without any weight, on or near the top of the water. When retrieving these bass baits, make sure you “jerk” your rod tip, rather than a constant reeling motion.
When selecting what clothing to wear on the river, comfort is key. Here in the mountains, the weather changes quickly. For winter fishing you should wear the same things you might wear skiing or snowmobiling, plus a bit extra. You must wear fingerless gloves so you have control over your line. This newly redesigned wader is warm and comfortable. For winter fishing nothing beats the boot foot.
I find few things as enjoyable or exciting as catching bass using my fly rod. Of course I love my spinning rod as well but it just doesn’t come close to the feeling fly fishing for bass has.
I have a fly rod that I use to fish Atlantic salmon, brook trout, chain pickerel and smallmouth bass and it works great for all of them.
Now I have never landed a huge salmon. A 17 pounder, estimated by the other fly fishers with me at the time, was the biggest Atlantic salmon I have fought but the rod held up fine.
It’s a light 8ft fly rod that I have had since the first time I started fly fishing here in New Brunswick and it’s still working great. Hope I didn’t just jinxs myself with that.
I used to have a boat and motor but it was too big for me at the time and I sold it. Now I have two float tubes so I can always take a friend fishing.
I don’t think it could get any more exciting than fly fishing from my float tube. Maybe fly fishing for Northern pike while wading might be more exciting but it’s a close call.

I was sitting at home Sunday morning looking out into my backyard. Everything had a layer of ice on it from the rain we had the night before. Looked gorgeous with the sun glistening off everything. Holy crap it was chilly outside this morning and it wasn’t even windy out. I bundled up with about 6 layers of clothes, wrapped my scarf around my entire head. [...] […]
I have a fishing buddy I like to refer to as Eagle Eye Paul. He could see things from such a distance away that at first we didn’t believe the things he said he saw, that we of course couldn’t see. It didn’t take long before he had proved this over and over. [...] […]
