Fishing reel Archives

best pickerel fishing dayWell Saturday October 01 may have been our last day out fishing for the New Brunswick 2011 fishing season.

Jamie had wanted to get out last weekend even though it was apple picking time. It was put to a vote and it was close. Jamie’s vote was for fishing.

Hint: We didn’t go fishing, you can figure out how the voting went.

Chipman Weather Was Looking Good

Jamie kept his eye on the weather for the Chipman area throughout the week and emailed me saying Saturday was going to be a bit rainy with a little wind but it was a better day than Sunday was going to be and wondered if I wanted to go fishing. DUH!!

“How’s leaving at 5am sound?”

I was outside waiting just before 5 and was surprised at how warm it was. I didn’t even need a jacket on at 5am on October 1st. Of course we talked and joked all the way there and hoping the water level had dropped.

dark
Well we’re here at Chipman but where’s The River??

Most of the time we leave in the dark and plan to get to the water right at daybreak, not today. We were pretty eager so we left a little early and arrived while it was still pitch black out.

We took the canoe off the car so Jamie could get his fishing gear out of the trunk and then we fished for a bit at the shore until it was light enough to get the canoe, ourselves and all our gear in the water.

Jamie bought this really cool head lamp. He looked like a miner. I have one similar but I usually only take it with me when Atlantic salmon fishing. The sure come in handy when there’s no light and you’re trying to tie on a fly.

Once we could start seeing the water we saw that it was extremely calm. Perfect, we didn’t even need jackets on until later when it started raining and when it did start raining a sweater kept me warm and dry, for most of the day.

red-bank-chipman

The cloud layer was low and heavy so it looked like the heavens would open up on us at any second. However the water was like reflective glass and there was no wind at all. Perfect for fishing the weeds for big pickerel.

We Saw Action Immediately

We were only on the water for a few minutes. Once we reached the opposite side of the cove where I like to fish the weeds we had pickerel going for our baits. What a great sign to have early.

It was very quiet, until the first shotgun blast rang out. I think duck season just opened up on us. Once we heard that first shot it was like machine guns going off every 10 minutes or so.

I told Jamie he better get rid of that duck suit for the day.

big-perch

I landed the big perch you can see on the left, gave it a little kiss and set it free.

We caught a few perch throughout the day. I love the way they tease the bait before they chomp down on it. Don’t sure what kind of fight a 3 pound perch would put up.

They sure can put up a good fight even when they are only a half pound, or less in some cases.

Then There Were Flying Pickerel

If you’re a fisher I am sure you love it when pickerel take to the air. This is what was happening on Saturday, they were wild and wacky fish to say the least.

It’s so cool to cast a bait and have a pickerel right under it. That’s always gets me going but when a bait hits the water and a pickerel leaps 5 feet through the air to smack that bait, well the beats all else.

I love Atlantic salmon fishing and Saturday I think these pickerel we imitating salmon leaping in the air. We need to take a non-fisher who loves taking video and pictures to capture some of the action that was going on.

We also had many pickerel exploding on baits right at the side of the canoe, usually soaking at least one of us. A few times I saw wakes and deliberately drew the pickerel boat side before they could strike.

I even pulled my bait to the back of the canoe so I could bring it right along side of Jamie. HaHa, your all wet.

The pickerel fishing and catching went on pretty much all day with only a few minutes between the action. Just enough time to cram food in our mouths.

The rain eventually started but at first a sweater was all we needed. Later the wind picked up and the rain got to the point I needed my rain gear on. That’s when it became a little tougher to keep the canoe on track, thank goodness Jamie has a trolling motor. We didn’t even have to use the anchor, all day.

Most Pickerel Were 20” or More

My two best chain pickerel were 22” and 23 1/2” however most through the day were about 20”. Well except for when my bait passed through the pickerel nursery and I caught two little guys.

One was so small I could almost hide it in my closed hand while the other was more like a hammer handle. They were good for a little teasing and jokes about size matters.

23inch-chain-pickerel

As you can see I have on my ‘Happy To Catch A Fish’ face.

I had been using a few other baits but you’ll notice I caught this 23 1/2” pickerel on the trusty red senko worm I have been using for the last few years. They do a great job of making pickerel go nuts.

For the better part of the day I was using a black and redish purple 5” senko. I used this bait for most of the day because it was such a dark cloudy day and I find a dark bait gets more action when it’s getting darker. And it did, all day long.

Poor Jamie managed to hook into a nice fat pickerel. I did a great job at netting his pickerel and then I gave him the net. That’s when he took the hook out, well it really just fell out of the pickerels mouth and it flipped and then slide right back into the water.

Didn’t even get a chance to take a picture or measure the monster. Could have been bigger than mine but we will never know now.

I had my camera almost ready when I saw it go. I think I should have snapped a picture of Jamie’s face.

You can be sure the next one he caught didn’t get away so easily.

Jamie Wasn’t Letting This One Slip Away

Even though the rain and wind eventually won out we still had about 12 hours of fishing. Who could ask for more. It was an awesome day and we even got home before dark.

Now I can’t end this post without making a little bit of fun of Jamie.

Jamie’s Been Abusing Froggies, Again

froggyAbout a month ago Jamie and I were fishing and he pulled the lovely looking segmented frog from his tackle back. He tied it on and let it run along side the canoe to see how it moved through the water.

It looked marvellous so he made his first cast with it, right into the weed bed and BAM a pickerel came up out of the water and slammed it good.

Immediately it headed toward Grand Lake with Jamies froggy.  Well the tension on Jamie’s reel was real tight and the line snapped and the fish was gone, with Jamie’s frog.

Since then he purchased a couple more of these great little frogs and decided to give it another try Saturday. This time he managed to keep the frog but it wasn’t getting as much action as some other baits we were using so he set it aside.

Later when we were packing up to go home I noticed that his little frog was following him around but when I took a closer look I realized it was actually hooked into the bottom of his boot. We rescued it with a pair of pliers and now it’s safely back in his tackle box for next year.

All in all we had a really good day with non stop action. Thanks Jamie.

casey-fishingGot an email from Casey inviting both Jamie and I for some fishing fun, last Friday.

I jumped all over that opportunity however Jamie had already been invited for not just one fishing trip but two of them. What a popular guy Jamie is.

I’ll be waiting to hear how his two day fishing trip on Ormocto lake turned out. It’s his first time there and I’ve never been there, yet.

Casey wanted to give the Salmon river from Grand Lake out of Grand lake. He did this run last year with another friend and had a great time.

It sounded great to me. I have fished a few coves off the Salmon river but never actually fished the river itself.

By 6 Friday morning we were on our way.

Whenever I am heading that way I like to see what the water in the Cannan river looks like and this morning it was like glass, just the way I love it.

We weren’t slowing down so I had to snap a picture on the fly. It looked perfect to me.

We took a few minutes and stopped at the bridge I first tried out my float tube at about 20 years ago. It didn’t really look like a spot you’d want to try backing a boat into.

I remember that day was about the hottest of the year. I was niche to be so close to the water as it was easy to soak myself to keep cool that day.

It’s a beautiful spot as you can see from the picture below. Made me want to run back to the truck to get my fishing gear.

Breath Taking View And The Fishing Rocks

We only hung around admiring the view for a minute or two as we were eager to get to the boat launch at Chipman and start fishing the Salmon river for some Pickerel or Smallmouth bass fishing.

chipman-boat-launch
Chipman Boat Launch

It didn’t take long to get the boat in the water. At this point there wasn’t a breath of wind, just the way I like it when pickerel fishing.

caseyandboat
All Well, Let’s Launch

The water temperature was only about 64 degrees so I suggested we hit a little back bay where the water might be warmer. Just up from the bridge there’s a nice cove so we gave it a try.

It didn’t take long to notice the water was still quite high compared to other years I’ve fished there.

casey-pickerel It didn’t take Casey long before he hooked the first fish of the day and actually landed it.

Turns out it was the biggest fish of our day as well at 24″.

I grabbed the rubber net and brought it into the boat. You have to love those rubber nets, especially when things are a big tangled up like that pickerel was in the leader.

Two seconds to get it untangled from the rubber net. Would have been a lot longer on the old net.

I don’t usually use a net for that reason but I grab that rubber net every chance I get now as it’s quick and doesn’t seem to hurt the fish at all.

Casey cast his RED WORM into some lilypads not far from the boat and, just as we love it, the water exploded and he had another pickerel.

Love Fishing To Lily Pads For Bass And Pickerel

I wasn’t even getting a strike and before I knew it Casey was up to four pickerel leaving me to take pictures.

Then the wind started and the fish turned off, for hours.

We left the cove and hit the river for a bit of trolling to see how we’d do at that. Still now fish.

Actually we never had a strike while trolling, not a single one all day.

We moved into another small bay after some time on the river and I finally had the chance to give my brand new Ugly Stik Lite combo a try.

I was so pleased with how smooth the casting was on my Ugly Stik and Shakespeare reel that I was probably casting further into the weeds than I should have been.

Of course my first strike was about a hundred feet out into the thick weeds and the battle was on.

I’m happy to say I landed that fish after a few minutes fighting him and the weeds. Then another cast and another pickerel, I was catching up.

Before long I was tied with Casey. He hadn’t even had a strike while I was catching up but once it was 4 all it only took about a minute and Casey landed #5.

What a show-off. I would never do that to a buddy. Ha

All in all the day was a lot of fun and Casey and I spent most of it laughing at the silly things we say and do.

By the way I love to have people take me fishing and I’m already packed for the next day on the water.

Fishing is a sport that requires you to be prepared. Sure, you can grab any sort of stick, attach a rope to it and TRY to catch something. But, in today’s wide world of products, you can do so much better and become that much more successful at fishing. There are several things that you’ll need and that’s what we will talk about here.

Bass Fishing

So what are some of the few big bass fishing secrets? First and foremost, you must start off by thinking like a bass fish. It may sound crazy but it could help you in finding where the big one is. It is also advised that you find the right and appropriate tackle to use in any situation or case. You must have a lot of information on crank baits, spinner baits, plastic worms, buzz baits and many other types of it.

This would be one of the things that you might be sure of. A good lure is one of the techniques you have to learn and be knowledgeable about. In addition, you must know what part of the lake or stream is best to bass fish on different weather conditions. It will be different on a rainy day or a windy day, early in the morning or late in the evening. Other factors also affect like on a crowded lake or a steady lake and many others. It is up to you to research further on it.

Another thing is that you must know the most common bass fishing mistakes that almost every fisherman makes and executes. After knowing them and knowing the reason why will instill in your mind that these common practices end up in error so you must not practice it. Another grateful thing is that you must choose the right bass fishing rod. You must learn the techniques and secrets on how to choose and where to find the most appropriate bass fishing rods there are. Furthermore, you must know how to develop a successful bass fishing pattern.

This will really help you in your fishing trip and having a larger bass. Some may go bass fishing at night so it is good that you learn professional night bass fishing techniques. Moreover, others may also be benefited by learning the professional winter bass fishing techniques for those who experience four seasons. These are only some of the many techniques and tips on how to improve your bass fishing strategy. If you do not have any strategy at all, you may really get disappointed from time to time. But, it is suggested that you first learn and read sufficient information and guides on bass fishing.

Fly Fishing

Knowing how to utilize fly fishing knots is an extremely important skill to have when mastering the sport of fly fishing. First of all, there are quite a few different types of knots that you can utilize for fly fishing, and most of them are relatively simple to understand. The most simple ones utilized are the arbor knot, Albright knot, nail knot, double surgeons knot, and improved clinch knot.

Each one of these knots serves their own individual purpose, and is beyond the scope of this article to explain exactly what they do. However, here’s the important thing you need to understand about this. Without any one of these knots, fly fishing would not work. Obviously, this sounds rather complex and complicated, but once you understand how to do it, it will become as simple as time your shoe. Do you remember when you were a young kid and you watch other people riding their bikes? At first, this probably looks so complicated, but once you understood how to do it, you were amazed at how simple the process was. The same could be said of fly fishing knots. There are certainly more knots than the ones listed, but these are by far the most basic, and the ones you should understand released at the beginning.

Once you understand how to tie a basic fly fishing knot, you want makes sure that before you begin to go fly fishing, you must be certain that they are going to hold up. Especially at first, you might not know how to do it very well, and you might lose an awesome catch because of a faulty knot if you aren’t careful. By far the quickest and easiest way to make sure the knot stays tight as is to simply pour a little water on them, and then pull the lines to ensure the Knights hold still.

One final fly fishing tip that, while unrelated to knots, is essential to having a successful and enjoyable fishing trip: make sure to purchase fly fishing waders, which is a special type of clothing to help you stay dry while out on the water. Without this, if you do happen to get wet while fishing, particularly on a cold day, the rest of the trip will be miserable.

General Fishing

First, what is fishing tackle? This is the equipment you’ll need to get your bait out there. You don’t need to spend a fortune on it, but what you should do is get the right products for your needs instead.

The Rod And The Reel

The most fundamental product that you need is the rod and reel. For a beginner, go with a lightweight choice that has a spinner reel on it. You can even purchase them together. As for length, go for about six feet for the adults and four to five for your child.

Next on the list is fishing line. It is also called filament. You’ll need to know which weight to get. This is called the pound test. The larger the pound test number is, the stronger the line is. Depending on the type of fish you are after, you’ll need to choose the line that is about the weight of the fish. For a small, light rod, go with up to six pound test. If you are using a large sized spinning reel, go with a stronger line. For bait casting reels, go with six to thirty pound test. The most popular options are the eight to sixteen. Don’t always think that heavier is better though as many of the fish will be able to see the line and won’t go near it.

Also in your equipment, you’ll need a fishing net. This will help you to catch your bait and can help you bring the fish in.

Options In Bait

There are many options in bait that you’ll need in that tackle box. First, we’ll talk about which live choices you have. Go with earthworms to start. You can dig your own or get them from the bait shop. You can go with mealworms or grubs as well. Depending on the type of fish you are after, you are likely to have a type of bait to use to catch them. Ask your local anglers for information about which seem to work the best for your area.

There are several other products that you will find that you’ll need in the way of tackle. Here are some of them and what they are good for.

Bobbers. These are floats that you’ll attach to your line to dangle your bait in front of the fish. They give you some extra weight when casting. They will sit at the top of the water. Small is a better way to go and make sure it is just enough weight to keep the bait from dragging.

Hooks. You’ll need to choose the right size for the job at hand. When using live bait, buy sizes from six to ten. For bullhead or catfish, you’ll need larger hooks. For catch and release fishing, look for fish hook barbs that can be flattened. To choose look for the size that is about the right size for the mouth of the fish you are trying to catch. Too large and you won’t get a bite and too small will leave you with the hook in its belly.

Sinkers are next. These are weights that come in a wide assortment. They are used to keep your line from floating under the water. Split shot sinkers are tiny and they are by far the most popular. But, some weights can get up to a pound in weight. Make sure that they are lead free though when you purchase them.

Leaders. These are small metal pieces with an eye on one end and a pin catch on the other. The pin is used to slip a hook or lure onto it. You’ll then thread the line through the eye and knot it. They are helpful when it comes to changing hooks and lures. You may want to consider them when you are after muskellunge, walleye, or northern pike as they’ll keep the fish from biting through your line.

Swivels are used instead to attach hooks and lures without a leader. There is an eye on one end and a pin clip on the other. The same process is done as with a leader except that the pin clip opens much like a safety pin. They protect your line from tangling as your bait moves in the water.

In your tackle box, fill it with several very important things. For example, you’ll need a good quality fishing knife. This will help you do many things from cutting tangled line to cleaning your catch. Also, make sure to have a pair of needle nose pliers in there to help you remove hooks safely. It is wise to have a first aid kit on hand as well and make sure it includes antibacterial lotion. In fact, the tackle box itself should be organized with all of your gear and kept clean. Some will even come with the artificial bait you may need.

The best place to find all that you need in fishing tackle is through the web. You’ll find some of the best products here. Not sure what to purchase? Ask a local professional to help you to know what works well in your area. This can lead to some excellent fishing experiences.

There is little worse for a fisherman than arriving at your special fishing spot and realizing that your much-loved reel badly needs repair or maintenance.  Although reel repair and maintenance should usually be left to the experts, you can do it yourself if you are prepared to take the proper precautions.  Keep in mind that someone who comprehends the workings of a reel should preferably undertake this kind of work, since it takes a lot of caution and care!

Preparation

How the project is begun is one of the most critical steps to any job that requires care, so you should prepare accordingly.  Set aside a workspace that is suitable for the job, and make sure you leave plenty of elbowroom.  Make sure that there is space for all of the delicate reel parts.  It’s smart to add a detailed photo of the reel piece-by-piece so that it can be put back together after the maintenance/repair is complete, or utilize a hand-drawn diagram.

Take it apart

Nearly all reels come apart in the same manner, since they are put together in a comparable way (although some reels may vary somewhat).  This step is the most imperative time to photograph or map each section as it is removed, so that you can assure that you will be able reassemble the reel later.  Make sure that you cautiously detach each piece and place it in some type of order (or bag in a labeled Ziploc bag).  Be sure to be particularly careful with very tiny pieces, like screws, springs, and like objects.  Each piece has a valuable purpose, and every one has a specific place in your reel.

The Tools

Repair and maintenance tools are some of the fundamental elements to the success of the project. Before starting the project, make sure that you have what you need, so that you do not have to go hunting for something in the middle of the project. Necessary tools usually include (but are not limited to) screwdrivers in various sizes (Philips and flathead), pliers, ratchets (including heads), clean and absorbent rags, reel grease and reel oil.  You will also need a small brush, such as a clean toothbrush. Make sure that the reel grease and reel oil are in closed containers to prevent messy spills.

Starting The Disassembly

If you proceed to take your reel apart in a controlled, graduated manner, you’ll find that your level of success will be far greater.  The first step involves taking the reel apart and taking care of the maintenance and cleaning of the reel case. This step is fairly simple but must be followed exactly.  There’s a nut that holds your reel handle in place – locate that nut and carefully remove it.  Using a counterclockwise motion, turn your drag star, remove it and set it aside.  Using great caution, remove the side place which is generally held in with four screws. You’ll have to have the right side of your reel facing you to accomplish this step.  Once you’ve separated the main gear assembly, you’ll see your spool in the reel case, which you should remove.

Now that your reel case is completely empty this is the best time to carefully clean it.  Remove any sand, dirt and old grease from it using a soft, absorbent cloth.  After you have thoroughly cleaned it you will want to make sure that you grease the entire mechanism to ensure smooth operation.  If your reel has a worm gear, make sure that you get to the drive for the level wind – inside the left plate – and turn that to help ensure that the grease is spread thoroughly.  After doing this use a very small amount of grease on all teeth, clean the spool and then carefully oil the end pins.  After this is complete you should replace the spool inside your reel case.

Main Drive Gear Assembly

Cleaning the main drive gear assembly is one of the most critical aspects of the cleaning and maintenance routine, and failure to exercise proper caution could result in your reel not working properly later.  Follow each step carefully and pay close attention to details. Carefully remove the screws attaching the main drive gear assembly.  Some will be screwed into a mounting plate, but others will be able to be lifted out.  Locate the main gear assembly.  Use your rag to remove sand, dirt, and old grease, making sure there is no trace of the residue remaining to ensure smooth function later.  Grease the gear assembly thoroughly.

The next portion of your cleaning and maintenance will involve the main drive gear assembly.  Each step must be followed precisely to avoid problems.

The small parts

The main gear will have washers in the top.  After removing them, you should first notate the placement of each.  Clean each washer with your clean rag.  Grease, making sure to massage the clean grease gently into every washer.  Remove excess grease with a clean cloth.  After the washers are dry, you can then replace them in the proper order.

Locked bearings can be a huge setback for some reels, so be sure to carefully lubricate every bearing down all sides or swap the bearing.  Do not try to take the bearing apart, or you will end up cleaning BBs from your workplace!

Putting it all together

To put your reel back together, start by placing your spool back inside the reel casing. Once this is done position your side plate (right side) and gear assembly over your end pin.  After doing this you should like up your screw holes making sure that both sides are aligned.  Carefully reinstall all the screws through the side plate, screw your star drag back and mount your reel handled.

Testing

Using your photos or map, confirm that each piece is back where it initially came from. Check your work by making sure the reel is well secured.

Summary

Though the process is monotonous and slow, you have the ability to execute these simple maintenance steps and save money.  Nevertheless, a calm hand is required, and you may discover that either a magnifying lens or excellent eyesight is very advantageous. No matter what kind of reel you are operating (conventional or bait-casting), these straightforward steps can help you steer clear of waiting for and paying a professional to keep your reel operating efficiently.  Since you are probably one of the many fishermen who are finicky about who handles their reels, simply utilizing methods such as these can help put a stop to mistakes and/or repair costs.  Keep your reel safe and clean, and you will nearly promise long life and many fishing memories.

There are many great reels out on the market, some of the most popular include: Shimano Reel and Penn Reels Fishing.
