It is amazing to me that more fisherman do not use live baits to catch bass. You do not need a expensive boat and rod and reels either, many large bass have been caught from the bank using live baits on simple live bait rigs. Some of the largest largemouth bass trophies have been caught using live bait. Actually you find very little fishing pressure from other bass fisherman if you fish for bass using live baits and you can use this fact to your advantage. My article today will focus on two proven bass living baits that I have had great success using to catch some nice largemouth bass.

Fish live striped shiners and bluegills for largemouth bass.

Shiners make great live baits for bass and I recommend using the following two types, and they are the golden and striped shiners. These shiners both are similar in size ranging fro 3 to 6 inches. Some larger shiners can reach 12 inches in length but don’t use them for bait. Concentrate on using 3 to 6” shiners. You can purchase both types of these shiners at your local bait shop, but if you can catch your own shiners that are local to the area they work much better.

The golden shiner’s main habitat is in the Eastern States but they have been introduced throughout the United States as bait fish. Their  normal size is 3 to 6 inches and they have a deep body with back being a dark green or olive color. The larger golden shiners develop a golden color. To identify them count the dorsal fin they will have 8 rays.

The striped shiner is similar in size to golden shiner but they have silvery sides with a darker color back. The also have distinguishing stripes that form a v behind the dorsal fin. They are native to the north but can be found throughout the Eastern States also.

The bluegill, bream or sunfish can be found all over the US and Southern Canada and they are very easy to catch. You want to catch small ones ranging in size from 3 to 4 inches. It has been my experience that the smaller gills are the best live bait for largemouth bass. Make sure you check with your states department of natural resources to make sure it is legal to fish with bluegills because some states will not allow it.

How to set up your bass live bait rigs to fish with shiners or bluegills.

1.0 Using the right bass rod and reel combo.

I use a heavy duty open face reel spooled with 15 to 20lb test fireline. Fireline is a bit expensive, but you can reduce the diameter of your lines by 50% witch is great when you want to fish higher test lines. The rod I use is a 7ft heave duty spin cast rod.

2.0 Here is how you setup a largemouth bass fishing live bait slip bobber rig.

Slide a slip bobber about 4 to 6 inches in length up your line. Next slide a bead and a bobber stop up your line. You will need this to adjust your depth. Tie on a three way ball bearing swivel to the line next. Cut off a 14 inch piece of fireline and tie one end to the open bottom eyelet on your ball bearing three way swivel. Next tie on a 1/4oz bass sinker to the other end of the line. Cut a 12 inch piece of fireline and tie one end to the open eyelet of the three way swivel. Next Tie a number 4/0 or 5/0 circle hook to the other end of the line. Make sure the leader and circle hook can rotate freely 360 degrees, because the bass live baits need to be able to move freely in a circling motion.

3.0 Here’s the correct method to hook your live golden, stripped shiners and bluegills, bream, or sunfish to your live bait bass rig.

Slide the 4/0 or 5/0 circle hook thru the lips or right behind the soft flesh of the dorsal fin of bluegill, bream or sunfish. Make sure it can swim freely in a circling motion. Slide the 4/0 circle hook through the eye socket of the larger shiners and right behind the soft flesh of the dorsal fin of smaller ones. Make sure your baits are lively when you cast them out.

Cut bait can be prepared in many ways. Some anglers fillet strips from the belly of the fish and save the carcass and entrails for later. Others cut the bait in pieces using the entire fish including the head. Try out different combinations until you figure out what the catfish want.

I’d suggest that you try matching the bait to the size of the catfish you think you’re going to find. In waters with few cats bigger than five or six pounds, use one to two inch chunks or strips of cut bait. Where bigger cats are plentiful, three to four inch long baits aren’t out of the question.

The catfish won’t be able to resist the temptation of your cut baits. Now, you have to be sure you’re using a hook that will grab them when they sink their teeth into your bait. If you choose too small a hook, your bait will fly off during casting and you’ll have no hope of catching anything. Treble hooks will hold your bait better and reduce the chance of it coming off. If you’re willing to spend a few extra bucks, you can buy treble hooks with springs to hold the bait in place. I think a properly baited number six or eight treble hook is the best for channel catfish.

So, now that you know how to make cut bait for big channel catfish, and you know what kind of hooks to use, you have no more excuses. Pack up your camping gear and your picnic backpack and head for your favorite stream to hook into some monster channel catfish.

I’ve been fishing this area for over three decades and I’m not kidding when I say I’ve caught over 100 smallmouth in a day many times.

My mom and dad have had a trailer at Sherkston, a resort community about 10 minutes from Port Colborne, for over 30 years. The lake is so clean that you can see the bottom when you’re in 20 feet of water. I don’t bring my a boat so unless someone takes me out fishing, I have to fish water I can stand in. Luckily, there is an ideal spot to go wading and fish for smallmouth. About a mile from shore there is a wreck of an old barge. During World War II when the price of steel skyrocketed, someone decided to salvage as much of the wreck as they could. They constructed a coffer dam to dry the lake bed from the shore to the barge. Then they built a road and were able to salvage most of the wreck. When they removed the dam and flooded the road, they left behind a fantastic smallmouth fishery.

Most of the time, the old road is covered by 1 – 4 feet of water for the first half mile or so toward the remains of the barge. From the edge of the road, the water immediately drops off to 5 – 8 feet deep. This is where the smallmouth hang out looking for food. I’ve found that top water baits with no weight work fantastically for an hour after dawn and an hour before dark. For the rest of the day I like to use a suspending crank bait. I’ve yet to find a time of day that these bass won’t bite when they’re in the mood. Most of the bass I’ve caught while wading toward the wreck are between 10 and 15 inches in length and the biggest one I caught was 21 inches long. These fish taste great so make sure you bring your bbq tools and cook them up.

The Sherkston resort is made up of a combination of seasonal and short term campers. Most people stay in small cottages that are can be bought or rented but there is also an area where you can camp in your family camping tent. Besides the amazing bass fishing, you can swim either in the lake, the deep, cold quarry or in the pool. There are miniature golf, an arcade and water slides for the children and there is a fully stocked camp store where you can stock up your picnic coolers.

Sherkson has grown up a lot in the 40 years since I started going there. Some of the development is good and some I wish had never happened. The one thing that hasn’t changed is the fantastic smallmouth bass fishing. I hope you get a chance to get up there and check it out.

The Alaska King Salmon is the official state fish and final prize for any fisherman on the lookout for the excitement of landing a big one. King Salmon worldwide famous Kenai Stream are bounteous and large. Sport fishermen in the Kenai have caught trophy salmon weighing just about 100-pounds, and it isn’t weird for anglers to haul in 40 and 50 pounders. Thousands of folk travel to the Kenai Stream and, with a licensed river guide, pursue its most cherished bounty– the King.

What do you use for bait? There are some kinds of rigs that are best for tempting Alaska King Salmon. Spin-N-Glows, Vibrex Spinners, and plugs are 3 effective lures that customarily provide perfect results. 2 common fishing methods used on guide boats on the Kenai are back trolling and drifting ; whilst a third and relatively new strategy called back bouncing is also becoming effective.

Back trolling usually incorporates Spin-N-Glows and salmon eggs or plugs. Some other effective lures for back trolling are Magnum Shake Worts, Flashtrap Spinners, Tadpollys, Kwikfish and Flatfish. Often the bait moves near to the bait moves close to the bottom of the river with a diver or weight attached 18 inches away from it to make allowance for proper depth. You’ll know you’ve got a King Salmon on your line when the rod goes down and stays down.

Drifting is equivalent to back trolling less the bait is allowed to delicately bounce off the base of the brook whilst the ship drifts with the present. Weights are used to keep the line at the correct depth. This technique is hard to master since it isn’t always east to set apart between a fish taking the bait and your line hitting off the bottom. A pause in the movement of the line frequently indicates a hit.

With back bouncing, the bait is rebounded off the bottom as the ship is slowly backed over a hole. Sink-N-Glows, a Vibrex spinner or similar lures when properly weighted frequently yield good results. When fishing, if you’re feeling a tug set the hook possibilities are there’s a salmon there.

If using a plug, you’ll be wanting to employ K-15’s or K-16’s – you want something enormous. Divers work fine to get the plug to the right depth and colorful, gaudy colours are advocated due to their abilities to attract attention.
