Undoubtedly the most crucial tool in the fly fisherman’s posession is his fly fishing rod. The rod assists you with line casting, controlling the line, and striking and landing of the fish you catch. Fishing rods need to bend and flex properly,so it is important that you get a rod that comfortably fits your hand.

First off, determine what you want to catch. Is trout what you’re after? Maybe freshwater bass is your favorite. And what about fishing in saltwater? These different selections create unique demands on the fly fishing rod. For each environment you would probably choose a different weight rod. A 6 wt makes a pretty good versatile rod. When trying to catch a brown or rainbow trout, try a four or five wt. An 8 to 9 wt is better to use with a largemouth bass, while a 6 to 8 wt is more suitable for a smallmouth bass. Your remaining tackle will be affected by these choices.

Once you’ve established what tyoe of fish you want to try for, you need to examine the action that each rod you’re considering posesses. The flexibility of the rod is called it’s action. Fly rod actions consist of three types: fast, medium, and slow. Additional casting distance can be obtained with less exertion with a fast action rod. On windy days these are great. They are harder for an angler just getting into the sport due to the rod’s power. Also, making accurate short casts is not their strong suit.

Rods with medium action tend to be more all-purpose. Although it is easier to learn on these than on rods with fast action, you will not get the accuracy and quiet that comes with slow action rods. Rods with a slower action are the easiest for a novice to experiment with. These are ideal for the smaller streams where you’ll have to be stealthy to sneak up on the fish.

You might have to give a few different brands a try in order to discover something that fits your casting method. Using a rod that is not designed for your style can make the fishing experience a frustrating one. A fly shop would be a great place to check out the many rods and reels at many different price ranges that are available. Check to see if they have a qualified casting instructor in house, they can be very helpful in finding a high quality proper fly rod that won’t break the bank.

The appropriate reel is as important as the right rod. Once you have selected your line, you can begin collecting the flies necessary to start catching your favorite fish.

Not surprisingly, there is a great deal of quality fly fishing equipment being offered online. To browse through some of these listings to find that right fly rod, fly reel or other piece of fly fishing gear, there are many online resources available.

Fly fishing rods come in a variety of materials including bamboo, fiberglass and graphite. Just like any the participants in any growing pastime, the fly fishermen are constantly looking for the best equipment, so manufacturers continually try to improve their fly fishing rods.

For those that are just beginning to delve into the world of fly fishing the vast selection of fly rods can be overwhelming as they try to determine the best fly rod for them. A beginner’s fishing rod should ideally be low priced as this will allow them to find out if fly fishing is right for them without spending a lot of money, while those who are more experienced and wish to compete should choose rods that are more expensive and will give a better performance. You can find inexpensive fly rods that vary in price between forty and eight dollars.

Bamboo rods have advanced to the point that the center is solid having strips of bamboo clued together to fit the outside of them. This is not one a beginner would wish to have due to the cost alone, this rod comes after you have decided the passion you have for fly fishing is unmatched by any other activity in your life.

Then there is the choice between graphite fly rods and fiberglass fly rods. The graphite fly fishing rods are made from graphite materials. These rods tend to be a little on the stiff side and rather strong. The quality of the graphite fly rods that you choose will determine its strength. Most fly fisherman prefer the graphite rods to the fiberglass rods since they are more sensitive and stronger than the fiberglass rods are.

Since the graphite fly rods are stronger giving the fly fisherman added support it is a good choice for the beginner. If you ask an experienced fly fisherman they will gladly give pointers on deciding which of the fly rods available are best suited for your use dependent upon your skill level.

Fiberglass rods come in a wide variety of strong flexible rods which makes them ideal for both the experienced fly fisherman and those that are just beginning to show an interest in the sport. While fiberglass fly fishing rods are much more flexible, they tend to be so heavy that many fishermen won’t use them.

These are just a few things to take into consideration when deciding on the purchase of fly fishing rods.
